Park Avenue Concerts is proud to open its 2025–26 season with the return of the celebrated Lake Shore Quartet, performing two deeply expressive works of the string quartet repertoire. The program features Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 1, “Kreutzer Sonata”, a gripping musical response to Tolstoy’s novella of the same name, which the composer read and immediately began setting to music in a burst of inspiration—crafting a dramatic and emotionally charged narrative through sound. Paired with Antonín Dvořák’s warm and folk-inflected String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat, Op. 51, this opening concert promises a stirring start to the season, highlighting two Czech masters at the height of their powers.

Three acclaimed chamber musicians— percussionist Ted Atkatz, pianist Audrey Andrist, and violinist Timothy Schwarz make their Park Avenue Concerts debuts, together with Park Avenue Concerts Artistic Director, cellist Amy Barston for a dynamic and wide-ranging program.
Atkatz, former Principal Percussionist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is now a leading Los Angeles studio musician, heard on over 60 film soundtracks including Frozen and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker; Andrist is celebrated for her 35-year tenure as pianist of the acclaimed chamber ensemble Strata; and Schwarz debuted with the Philadelphia Orchestra at age nine and has since built an international career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, and advocate for living composers.
The program opens with Osvaldo Golijov’s Lúa Descolorida, a tender, luminous setting of a Galician poem by Rosalía de Castro that reflects on longing and loss. Ástor Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango traces the evolution of tango from its raw, early street style to its modern concert form. The traditional Scottish air Rob Roy Crosses the Minch appears here in a spirited, virtuosic arrangement for violin and cello. The evening concludes with the world premiere of a new work by Adam Silverman, written especially for these performers.

Park Avenue Concerts concluded its 2024–25 season with a performance of Brahms’ Sextet in G major, a work powerful in its scope and intensity. We are now pleased to present its companion, the Sextet in B-flat major, Op. 18, one of Brahms’ most radiant chamber works. Written in the composer’s early years, the B-flat Sextet combines youthful exuberance with the structural mastery for which Brahms would become renowned.
This performance will again feature distinguished musicians from The Philadelphia Orchestra, joining Park Avenue Concerts’ director, cellist Amy Sue Barston, in a collaboration that continues our tradition of bringing world-class artistry to our community.
LUDWIG van BEETHOVEN: Duet mit zwei obligaten Augengläsern
JOHANNES BRAHMS: Sextet in B-flat Major
